Thomasville is a small community near High Point in the Triad region of North Carolina. This former furniture hub is nicknamed “Chair City” and even has an enormous chair landmark in the center of town.

Real Estate

Due to the town’s location on the outskirts of a larger city, Thomasville enjoys a very low cost of living well below the national average. The median home price reflects this as well, as Thomasville homes cost much less than those in the area. There are a variety of home styles in Thomasville, including traditional, Colonial and Craftsman, in addition to a growing number of new construction homes to accommodate a steady increase in population.

Lifestyle and Attractions

Thomasville is a small city just eight miles southwest of High Point. Located between I-85 and US-29, Thomasville is easily accessible from nearby Triad cities. Residents of Thomasville enjoy the luxury of a smaller, laid-back community while maintaining proximity to High Point for big city conveniences. Thomasville is known for its involvement in the furniture industry, and is nicknamed “Chair Town” or “Chair City,” and even hosts The Big Chair, a 30-foot chair landmark, in the middle of the city. Thomasville is a rapidly growing city with a population of more than 25,000.

Thomasville hosts the state’s oldest festival, called Everybody’s Day, which began in 1908. The city’s historic downtown is filled with charming shops, locally owned eateries, and other small businesses. Thomasville is located near Lake Thom-a-Lex, the perfect destination for outdoor recreation. Additionally, residents may access Thomasville Recreation and Parks Department parks with over 106 acres of recreation property, or Davidson County’s parks, including East Davidson Hughes Park and Optimist Park. Golf enthusiasts frequent the Winding Creek Golf Course, located in Thomasville.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Thomasville has eight schools from the Davidson County School System and four in the Thomasville City Schools, and the city shares in the advances and innovations of this renowned technology corridor. There are 14 private schools in the Thomasville/High Point area, including High Point Christian Academy, High Point Friends School, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Wesleyan Christian Academy, and Westchester Country Day School. In addition to being close to Davidson County Community College, Thomasville is near a number of colleges and universities, including High Point University, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and more.

During the early 1840s, Thomasville was born when North Carolina senator John W. Thomas traded two horse-drawn wagon loads of bacon for 1,100 acres of land that would lie next to the proposed new railroad tracks. Several years later, industrious citizens began making chairs for both personal home use and extra income, thus creating several chair companies. In 1904, the Thomasville Chair Company was created.

The community eventually became more prominent, and even attracted former President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1960, while he did a “whistle stop” standing on Thomasville’s Big Chair. The furniture industry changed over time with the relocation of several factories, causing a shift for the town’s economy and overall focus. However, the city’s rich history is still seen and celebrated to this day.

The Mitchell House Museum was founded in 1982, and was the first cottage on the Mills Home Campus, the original campus of the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina.
