Lake Wylie, South Carolina is an unincorporated community along the western shore of the lake named “Lake Wylie.” Residents enjoy lakefront properties, plenty of recreational opportunities, and convenient access to nearby Charlotte.
Real Estate
Lake Wylie real estate reflects the area’s population boom in the early 2000s, as almost half of the homes in Lake Wylie were built between 2000 and 2009. Despite the high-end feel of the community, Lake Wylie homes are reasonably priced. There are a number of lakefront properties in the community, as Lake Wylie is located on a peninsula with plenty of shoreline.
Lifestyle and Attractions
Although it is located in South Carolina, Lake Wylie is considered an affluent suburb of Charlotte. This census-designated place is a fast-growing, resort-like community located on a peninsula of Lake Wylie. Residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle with a plethora of recreational opportunities, such as boating, fishing and swimming in the beautiful lake. Residents enjoy free boat access to the lake provided by four boat ramps at the Buster Boyd Boat Ramp. The Buster Boyd Bridge crosses the lake and connects the community of Lake Wylie with North Carolina. The bridge is more than a connection to Charlotte; it is a focal point for celebration, as the community gathers there for a Fourth of July fireworks show and a holiday boat parade each winter.
This small community has seen a significant increase in population, as residents are attracted to the small-town feel and opportunity for waterfront living. River Hills Country Club is an outstanding private club situated along the lake with a well-regarded golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool and a restaurant. Boaters may park their boats at the Lake Wylie Marina, which is adjacent to the Papa Doc's Shore Club on the Lake. There are a few restaurants and shops in the area, and residents may access even more dining and shopping options at RiverGate Shopping Center, located just a few miles away. They may also access the big-city conveniences and attractions in Charlotte, situated approximately 20 miles northeast of Lake Wylie.
Nearby Schools and Higher Education
Lake Wylie has 10 schools in the award-winning Clover School District, and there are three private schools within the Lake Wylie vicinity. Several colleges and universities are in the backyard of Lake Wylie, including Clinton College, the University of South Carolina Upstate, Winthrop University, and York Technical College. Additionally, residents may easily access the many institutions in Charlotte, including the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Queens University, Johnson & Wales University, and more.
History
Much of the charm and attraction of this resort-like community is because of the creation of Lake Wylie. In 1904, the Catawba Power Company, which later became Duke Energy, constructed a dam on the Catawba River near Fort Mill. Thus, Lake Wylie was formed. It was the first lake on the river, preceding Lake Norman by 60 years. The dam was rebuilt in 1924, and the lake’s surface expanded to 13,443 acres and its shoreline increased to 325 miles.
Housing in the Lake Wylie community experienced significant growth during the 1990s and early 2000s, and most homes were built after 1990, with less than two percent of the housing units constructed before 1960. This lakefront community has become a popular residential area for those who work in Charlotte and surrounding areas.
