History
Wake Forest was founded in 1820, when Dr. Calvin Jones purchased 615 acres for a farm. The town was originally known as “The Forest of Wake”, due to the large tract of forests occupying this section of Wake County. Jones sold the farm to the North Carolina Baptist Convention, who eventually opened the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute, which later became Wake Forest College. The town was first incorporated as the “town of Wake Forest College” in 1880. The college closed briefly during the Civil War and then relocated to Winston-Salem in 1834. The original campus of Wake Forest University is now the home of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1909, the word “college” was removed from the town’s title, and it simply became Wake Forest.
