History
The name Keowee comes from Cherokee word meaning ‘Place of the Mulberries’. During the American Revolution, the Cherokee lost favor with their former British allies resulting in the Cherokee War between the Cherokees and the South Carolina militia. The war ended with the Cherokees pursuing peace by giving up nearly all their land in South Carolina. Many Cherokee artifacts can be found in the local museums throughout Oconee County.
