History
In the 1750s, German, Dutch and Scots-Irish settlers arrived to an area north of Cherryville from Pennsylvania. A village slowly developed, followed by modern roads, and eventually, the Carolina Central Railroad in 1862. Railroad construction in this area was interrupted by the Civil War, but resumed shortly after, making Cherryville a water and coal stop. A local resident planted cherry trees along the tracks, and train engineers soon began calling the area “Cherryville” which became its official name when it was incorporated in 1881.
The Cherryville New Year’s Shooters is a unique community tradition that dates back to the 1800s. In those days, settlers celebrated the New Year by reciting chants and firing their muskets. Today, hundreds of people gather in Cherryville for an entire day reciting a three-minute chant and firing muskets at various locations around town.
